When Lord Krishna and other Maharshis wanted to convince Duryodhana to make truce with Pandavas by telling him what is dharma, he said:
"Janami dharmam na cha me pravrutthih janamyadharmam na cha me nivrutthih |kenaapi devena hrudhisthithena yatha niyuktosmi thatha karomi ||"
Which means, I know what is dharma (=righteousness), yet I cannot get myself to follow it! I know what is adharma, yet Icannot retire from it! O Lord of the senses! You dwelt in my heart and I will do as you impel me to do.
This one sloka Duryodhana said in the full court
before Sri Krishna changed everything not only in his life, but also in the
life of everyone in the family of Kuru and the world.
If you closely observe, during these days, there is
a Duryodhana hiding in every one of us. We all know what is the right thing to
do in every situation, but somehow we do not have enough determination and
dedication to follow it. Maybe only because we are not enough disciplined and
are not trained well enough in detachment. Detachment is not supposed to be
towards the world. Instead, what is required is detachment towards unrighteous
behavior with a discernment to know what is your personal right and personal
wrong.
Ironically, if you observe, we all want our
children and our loved ones to be exactly the opposite of us. We want them to
be strong, determined, dedicated, and disciplined towards their goal. We also
want them to be detached too towards all negative attractions. But, when it
comes to us, we have all the excuses in the world – don’t we see it?
We always forget one thing, nobody follows what is
told but only follow what they perceive in their life. A
Duryodhan-character-predominant human being produces a child and want the child
to be like Arujun, then he seldom realizes that he then becomes the enemy of
his own child. Because the child has to transcend what he sees and behave
different. All the weaknesses, imperfections, and absurd emotions that he sees
in his parents become his hurdles and bottlenecks in his life.
Remember, if you want to have the miracle of having everything best in your life, all you have to do is to “be” the miracle.
Just by studying medicine, or any subject for that
matter, you cannot fulfill your objectives, but only by practicing it. In the
same way, just by meditating or doing yoga, you will not attain your objective
of Moksha; you also need to practice the principles and values of
yoga/meditation. Getting to a doctor won't cure you, you need to follow the
prescription. Without character and without following the principles and values
prescribed in yoga sutras or in Bhagavat Gita, all your meditation is useless
or pointless. Can a doctor be any good to you, if you do not follow his
prescription?
DON’T JUST RUN BEHIND THE GURUS FOR ASHIRVAD AND DON’T JUST MEDITATE, BEHAVE AND BE OUT OF YOUR MEDITATIVE STATE. This is what I (Atmananda) have been trying to teach you.
If you do not settle for anything less than the best in your behavior, I promise, you often will find it in your life too.
